Peer and Practice Assessment

Each year, kinesiologists will be randomly selected to participate in a peer and practice assessment (PPA). The PPA is an educational opportunity designed to assess your knowledge, skill and judgment, and to help you identify areas of strength and improvement within your practice.

What to expect

The PPA is a structured interview conducted by a highly-trained peer assessor. The peer assessor will ask you situation-based questions (relating to a recent event or situation) and/or cased-based questions (relating to a recent patient/client case). You will be asked to describe the situation and/or case, your actions, and the results and/or patient/client outcomes. Kinesiologists in clinical or mixed practice will be asked one set of situation-based questions and one set of case-based questions. Kinesiologists in non-clinical practice will be asked two sets of situation-based questions. The questions asked are based on the Essential Competencies of Practice for Kinesiologists in Ontario and the College’s practice standards.

For kinesiologists in clinical or mixed practice, the peer assessor will also discuss record keeping practices. You will need to bring ten recent patient/client records. This may include original copies of records or printed copies of electronic records.

Timing and location

Three-month PPA cycles will be scheduled twice per year- in the spring and fall. The PPA must take place within 90 days of receiving your notice of selection. If you are randomly selected, you will work with the College's Director, Quality Assurance to determine the most suitable date and time for the assessment.

If you are in clinical or mixed practice, the PPA will occur at your place of work and the process will take approximately four hours. If you are in non-clinical practice (i.e. do not provide direct patient/client care), the PPA will be conducted over the telephone and the process will take approximately two and half hours.

Access to patient/client information and records

For the purpose of carrying out a PPA, a peer assessor, or the College, may review any records related to the care of a patient/client. The College’s right to access this information is in the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991 and the Personal Health Information Protection Act, 2004. You can provide your employer with a copy of the Employer Information- Access to Patient/Client Records letter.

Preparing for the PPA

You are strongly encouraged to review the Essential Competencies of Practice for Kinesiologists and the practice standards and guidelines to self-assess whether you are meeting the practice standards.

After the PPA

The peer assessor will write a report which is made available to you following the assessment. You then have an opportunity to send a written submission in response to the report, offering additional information that was not communicated during the interview.


The College will not notify your employer of your participation in the PPA and/or inform of the outcome. If your employer must be notified to obtain patient/client records, it is your responsibility to advise them of the process.
