To help identify learning opportunities and facilitate communication between kinesiologists and CKO, we launched a series of Practice Standard and Guideline surveys in March 2024. The sixth survey involved questions about the Practice Standard – Professional Collaboration, the Practice Standard – Supervision and Education of Students and Support Personnel and the Practice Guideline – Accountabilities in Different Roles. This survey was published in the August issue of @ CKO, the College’s official e-newsletter.
We are pleased to provide a report on the survey results. Some of the highlights:
Kinesiologists who responded to the survey reported a wide range of roles and responsibilities, including:
- Being the sole practitioner in their practice
- Describing themselves as supervisors/employers
- Self-identifying as members of a multi-disciplinary team or teams
- Practicing as assistants or in a supporting role;
- Conducting research; and
- Working as part of an administrative team.
- When supervising students or support personnel, the Practice Standard – Supervision and Education of Students and Support Personnel can provide some helpful guidance. Kinesiologists should remember that:
- Depending on the knowledge, skill and judgement of the student or support personnel, the kinesiologist does not necessarily have to provide direct supervision of the student or support person at all times.
- However, there are some specific tasks that the College does not permit kinesiologists to assign to students or support personnel. These include:
- Obtaining informed consent for a course of treatment and/or a change in the course of the treatment; and
- Discharging a patient/client from treatment and creating a discharge plan.
- Also, when working individually or as part of a team in multidisciplinary practice settings, kinesiologists are expected to adhere to the College’s standards at all times. While this may sometimes create challenges, such as where workplace and practice standards may not always fully align with those of the College, kinesiologists are expected to collaborate to create and maintain an environment where all regulated health professionals may optimize their practice for the welfare of the patients/clients.
We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to respond, and we look forward to your continued engagement with this survey series!
